Benefits of Using Fastag To Pay for Your Toll

One requires a lot of patience to wait at a toll plaza, especially on long journeys taken by road. However, this problem has pretty much become non-existent with the introduction of FASTag. Crossing a toll plaza is much less time consuming and a lot easier, as it allows drivers to continue driving without requiring to patiently line up in a queue.

What is FASTag?

With FASTag, a reloadable tag that uses Radio Frequency Identification technology (RFID), one gets the choice to opt for the automatic deduction of a toll’s charge. Cash transactions are reduced, and vehicles can easily and quickly cross tolls. A FASTag is transfixed on a vehicle’s windscreen in a manner such that a toll gate’s sensors can easily read it and employees are also able to easily notice it.

As of now, a whopping four hundred plus toll plazas across the country have introduced FASTag, with numbers on the rise. The Government of India has made FASTag mandatory since Feb 15, 2021 for all classes of vehicles that will be using toll plazas. The programme is handled by the NPCI or the National Payment Corporation of India, and the IHMCL otherwise known as the ‘Indian Highways Management Company Limited.’

How to Get FASTag?

One can purchase their FASTag at the NETC Member Banks. NETC stands for the National Electronic Toll Collection, and these bodies charge nominal amounts for registering a FASTag to a vehicle. You can also get FASTag online by simply logging in to the FASTag portal, creating an account and doing an online payment. When one opts to get a FASTag online or offline, they receive some refundable security attached to it. This security depends upon the vehicle that is registering to receive the FASTag. Those who own multiple vehicles are mandated to register for multiple FASTags.

Benefits of using a FASTag:

When one opts to get a FASTag online, they often don’t think about the benefits that come with doing so. People treat it as a compulsory step towards buying or registering a new vehicle as one’s own. However, FASTag offers its users the following advantages:

1. Lesser Wait Time At Toll

The most obvious benefit is that using FASTag is a Governmental initiative to reduce the wait time at toll plazas. This waiting time has become a relic of the past, since India went forward with the ‘Smart City’ initiative with one of its key features being ‘FASTag’. One no longer needs to scour for change, look for the exact amount to be paid and struggle to make it in time without holding back the queue behind them. With FASTag, all one has to do is stop at the toll, scan and pass through it, without any wasted time.

2. Easy Recharge

It's very easy to link your bank account with your FASTag Account. In this case, there is no necessity to recharge this separately. One simply needs to make sure that they have sufficient balance in their bank account to cover for their toll charge. You also have the option to link your FASTag to your NHAI wallet — a prepaid wallet that has the option to be recharged through a variety of means. You can recharge your NHAI wallet through the Debit Card/UPI, NEFT/Internet Banking or even cheque.

3. Validity Period

Did you know that when you get your FASTag online it comes with a validity period? Not only is your waiting time reduced within lines, but you have access to this feature for quite a long time. This period lasts for <5> years. Once you set up your FASTag, you need not worry for this entire duration. All you need to do is keep your bank account running or keep your NHAI wallet charged, and you have access to the same FASTag sticker for <5> whole years. Hence, this ease-of-use feature makes FASTag very attractive as an initiative.
